Day Six
“Where is he?”
“He’s holed up in the building, sergeant.”
The sergeant looked at the array of soldiers and mounted gun emplacements trained at the main door and grimaced. “I guessed as much, corporal. I meant whereabouts in the building.”
“Your guess is as good as ours, sergeant. But we don’t think he’s alone in there.”
The Legionary officer read the report off his wrist computer. “Amtheaz Enmann. How promising a lead is he?”
“Officer Nocturne was investigating him before his… loss, sergeant. We think he’s the best lead we’ve had so far.”
“I hope you’re right about this. We’re stretched thin as it; we’re the last unit on this godforsaken rock.” The rest of the bastards are just watching us in their ships, the sergeant added privately. Full-scale withdrawal my ass, they just evac’d the officers and the damn ‘elites’.
“Enmann!” the Legionary yelled, his voice amplified by his helmet’s vocaliser. “Come out, we can talk this over!”
They waited. After a few seconds, a voice rang out from an unspecific window.
“Go to hell, you Dommy fascist! You ain’t seen nothing yet!”
“Uh.” The corporal cleared his throat. “I guess they don’t want to talk.”
The sergeant lowered his visor. “To hell with it. Open fire!”
Rifles barked, shoulder-mounted cannons disgorged energy, and even a few antimatter grenades shot towards the ramshackle city block, consuming it in multicoloured light, crumbled by plasma blasts, chipped by photon blocks, split asunder by-
Except that didn’t happen. The massed firepower of the remaining Legionaries was striking some barely-visible forcefield. It rippled and quivered, but it held fast.
“I am Ebfan the Obstructor, and you people… are pathetic! You call this a bombardment? I could do this all day!”
Telekinesis. Goddamn telekinesis.
“That is such bullshit!” the sergeant bellowed, “Those cheating, shit-sucking, inbred, animal-screwing psychic bastards!”
“They can only do it once.”
“…what?”
“They can only do it once,” Captain Skye repeated, clear and crisp over the soldier’s communicator. “Nocturne studied their abilities before he died. They will not be able to block the vote again. The will of the people of Arcadia will be enacted.”
The sergeant rolled his eyes. “Yeah? That doesn’t fill me with hope, Captain.”
“At least we know they can’t block him, sarge,” said the corporal, jabbing a thumb over his shoulder.
On the horizon, towering above all and sundry, the Behemoth stood ready.
"IDENTIFY."
"I'm... I'm... they call me CC..."
"SENSORS CONFIRM YOU AS A PSIONIC INDIVIDUAL. I DETECT HEIGHTENED MENTAL ACTIVITY."
"That's true, but-"
The blast could be heard for miles around.
